Frequently asked questions

An Accessible Rideshare Group membership gives you the freedom to travel locally without worrying about expensive out-of-pocket costs. Your membership makes the most of your DSS flexible funding by covering the full fare on all your Uber rides.

You're travelling with certainty. You'll never worry about unexpected costs or whether your ride is coming. You can track your driver's arrival in real-time, share your trip status with loved ones, and travel in a standard car without the stigma of a marked van.

Recent changes to Disability Support Services funding give you greater choice and control over the supports you receive. You're eligible to join Accessible Rideshare Group if you receive DSS Flexible Funding, including:

  • Carer Support
  • Individualised Funding (IF Personal Care, IF Household Management, IF Respite, Enhanced Individualised Funding)
  • Enabling Good Lives Personal Budgets

The Total Mobility Scheme has its limits. It covers up to 75% of a fare (decreasing to 65% in 2026), but you still have to pay the rest, and it doesn't currently work with Uber.

Accessible Rideshare Group works differently. Because your membership is fully covered by your Individualised Funding or EGL budget, there are no out-of-pocket costs when you ride. Plus, you get the speed, reliability and convenience of Uber.

Yes! Uber's app is fully accessible for VoiceOver or TalkBack users. You are also legally entitled to bring your service animal on any Uber trip.

If you use a foldable wheelchair, walker, or cane, standard Uber vehicles can usually accommodate you. However, please note that Uber in New Zealand cannot currently accommodate non-foldable motorised wheelchairs.

Uber offers incredible freedom—you see the price upfront, track your driver's arrival, and travel on your own schedule.

It is a "curbside-to-curbside" service. While drivers are generally helpful, they are not trained carers and cannot provide full door-to-door physical assistance or manual handling. If you are comfortable getting in and out of a standard vehicle independently (or with a support person you travel with), it's a game-changer.

We offer different membership tiers based on how much travel you do. When you sign up, we'll help you select a tier that provides the right amount of Uber availability for your lifestyle, with the flexibility to change it later if your needs evolve.

Our membership launches in April 2026. Join the waitlist now, and you'll be the first to know when we're up and running.
